The full-day experience with an international supporting programme
From 27 June - 13 September 2026
In 2026, experience the highlight of the Elspe Festival year – the Karl May Festival – a full-day experience for the whole family.
In the Wild West of North America, at a time when the railways are about to transform the land, a German arrives in New Mexico: Old Shatterhand. He is looking for work and adventure – but he soon realises that far more is at stake here than surveying and railway tracks.
For this land belongs to the Apache.
Together with his father, Intschu-Tschuna, Winnetou tries to keep the peace between his people and the white settlers. Winnetou firmly believes in understanding rather than violence. His sister Nscho-tschi and the white teacher Klekih-Petra share this wish for peace and mutual respect.
But not everyone thinks this way.
The ruthless bandit leader Santer is determined to build the railway through Apache land at any cost – out of greed for gold and power. Treaties are broken, promises lose their value. Tangua, the proud chief of the Kiowa, also deeply distrusts the white men. He believes peace is an illusion and that only strength and battle can secure his people's survival. A fierce duel with Intschu-Tschuna will decide whether the tribes go on hoping for peace or prepare for war.
Caught between all these fronts is Old Shatterhand. He sees that injustice is being done and refuses to take part in it. When he openly opposes Santer, he becomes a target himself. In the heated atmosphere, it even comes to a fight between him and Winnetou – a tragic misunderstanding that shows how quickly fear and anger can drive even friends apart.
Even for long-standing festival visitors, this production holds many surprises.
